The first serious book-length study to focus on the nuclear and extended families in a large northern European city of the Middle Ages, The Domestic Life of a Medieval City is an elaborate reconstruction of the lives of women and children in fourteenth-century Ghent. David Nicholas has used a large volume of archival materials to present the experience of ordinary people generally overlooked by historians. Steven Rowan (University of Missouri-St. Louis) has noted the book's "powerful impact as a description of fourteenth-century urban life." The author discusses all aspects of the family and kinship structure-legal, economic, social, and sexual. His book will drastically revise some prevailing ideas about the roles of women, both in the family and in the business world, and of children within the family and in the labor force. Nicholas demolishes stereotypes that place women exclusively in domestic roles and decisively refutes the theory that children were neglected because childhood did not exist as a concept in the medieval mind. He also counters the notion that all marriages were arranged by parents and that financial rather than emotional considera- tions were paramount. Medieval and early mod- ern social historians, historians of the family, and economic historians will be struck by the extent to which developments once thought to have come only in the sixteenth or seventeenth century can be traced to the Middle Ages.
